Press Release: Murder On Reserve

Metro Theatre is excited to debut the Vancouver Premiere of MURDER ON RESERVE –  a comedy mystery written by Thomas Hischak and directed by Don Briard on our stage January 19 – February 9.

Murder On Reserve

Things are a little too quiet, even for the Reference Section of the public library.  Crotchety old Faulkner Seaton has been strangled while the dusty old library was open. Most puzzling of all is the fact that nobody in the place saw or heard a thing.

Murder On Reserve Books

The big city cops are called in. Their investigations reveal a motley crew of oddball suspects, a very limited set of motives and little evidence.   The characters are familiar —no mobsters or spies; no famous sleuth; no tycoons or famous authors—just people you might know. Seaton, had terrorized generations of  young people, and was thoroughly disliked by everyone—but why was he killed in such a public place?  What motive could possibly justify such a risk?  And why didn’t the town have anywhere to get a decent cup of coffee?

Director Don Briard comments “The core of Murder on Reserve it is about the characters and their evolution from ordinary to vivid, believable and interesting suspects. It develops as the cops set a trap to catch the murderer that results in a thrilling and revealing conclusion.”

Tickets are $25 Adult or $22 Senior/Student with a special 2 for $37 every Thursday.

The Story

Murder On Reserve - Tell Us More

The death of Falkner Seaton in the reference section of the Sanford Public Library is the most exciting thing to happen there “since they put in carpeting two years ago”.

The death of the irascible Seaton is clearly mourned by no one in the small town. Inspector Trigg and Lieutenant Roberts, from St. Louis, brought in to handle the investigation, are faced with the problem of untangling the events and personalities.  Seaton, a retired teacher who had terrorized generations of Sanford’s young people, was thoroughly disliked by everyone—but why was he killed in such a public place?  What motive could possibly justify such a risk?  And where could  Inspector Trigg get a decent cup of coffee?

Interview after interview reveals a picture of life and relationships in the small town.  Ethan Binnie, the martinet who has run the library for over twenty years warred with Seaton over his violation of the rules, but would Binnie kill to enforce them?  Judith Carr, Binnie’s assistant, would clearly do anything to make life smoother for a man whom she has silently adored for so long, but would she go that far?  Mrs. Chesley, Sanford’s resident gossip is happy to tell all she knows or suspects, including hints about Fern Mansfield’s family.  Wiley Meyers, the town character and sometime drunk, appears good natured, but is there more to him than dreams of travel to exotic  locals?  Roy Templeton, the town’s real estate developer is characterized as a “smiling piranha”, but is his urging of Trigg not to upset the town based on more than sensitivity? Personalities become clear, but hard evidence and motive remain elusive.

Inspector Trigg is forced to come up with a desperate plan to smoke out the killer, but will it work, or will he and Roberts be condemned to stay in Sanford drinking bad coffee?
