The Story
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Adapted by Joan Bryans from the Oliver Goldsmith Classic
One of the eighteenth-century’s most enduring comedies, She Stoops to Conquer takes a comedic, often farcical, look at the behavior and marital expectations of the upper classes in England. The play centers around the desire of Hardcastle, a wealthy landowner in the country, for his daughter, Kate Hardcastle, to marry the well-educated Charles Marlow. Together with Marlow’s father, Sir Charles Marlow, they arrange for the younger Marlow to visit the Hardcastle’s house and court Kate.
Kate is less than impressed when she finds out that, despite his otherwise strong, respectable character, Charles is extremely shy and reserved around ladies. She therefore vows to herself that she could never marry him.
Before Charles and his friend, George Hastings, can arrive at the house, they are waylaid by Mr. Hardcastle’s stepson at the local alehouse. A mischievous joker, Tony Lumpkin persuades them that the Hardcastle’s house is, in fact, the local inn. Thus, when Marlow and Hastings arrive, Marlow treats the Hardcastle family with impudence and disrespect, falsely believing them to be servants there.
In order to get to the bottom of his true character, Kate disguises herself as a maid and comedy ensues as Marlow flirts with the “maid” and disregards her father.
Meanwhile, George Hastings is thrilled to find his true love, Constance Neville, living at the Hardcastle’s house. Through the scheming of Mrs. Hardcastle, she is due to marry Tony, despite their mutual dislike of each other. Finding a way to get out of his marriage, Tony helps Constance to retrieve her inheritance and gets his mother out of the way, dumping her in a local horsepond!
Finally, as Marlow’s father arrives, all is put to right and Charles Marlow is mortified by his behavior. Forgiven by all, the two couples find happiness with each other, and Tony successfully gains his rightful inheritance without an unwanted engagement.

Director’s TALK: She Stoops To Conquer
Joan Bryans has been involved in live theatre as an actress, producer, playwright, and director in both BC and England for way more years than she really cares to remember.
Join her and the cast of SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER immediately after the show on Friday, March 2nd for an informal chat.
Discussions will centre around:
• the music and songs in the production
• the situation in SHE STOOPS – Is it at all imaginable today? How would it, could it happen?
• the importance of the country vs town distinction
• the challenge of adapting an 18th century play for modern audiences
Joan & Cast will then invite questions from the audience.
There is no additional charge for the Director’s Talk, just stay in your seats or move up a bit closer to the stage. The session will last approximately 20 minutes.

Press Release:
This is a boisterous fast moving mélange of misunderstandings, love and silly comedy
Metro Theatre is pleased to present the world premiere of a new adaptation by Joan Bryans of Oliver Goldsmith’s classic.
The much beloved 18th century “laughing comedy” revolves around Charles Marlow, a young bachelor who brims with confidence when dallying with working-class women but becomes a shivering bundle of nerves in the presence of high-born ladies. Travelling to the home of his father’s associate Mr. Hardcastle. Marlow and his friend Hastings are tricked into thinking that Mr. Hardcastle is a common innkeeper. While at the “inn,” Marlow unexpectedly runs into Kate, the woman his father wants him to marry. He’s so terrified, though, he can’t even look at her. So Kate decides to don the unthreatening guise of a barmaid, stooping in social status to conquer his heart. A series of ridiculous intrigues, more pranks and an unexpected visit from Marlow’s father compound the zany plot resulting in more foolish foppish fun.
Director Joan Bryans has yearned to direct She Stoops to Conquer for ages considering it to be one of the brightest gems in the crown of British Comedy. Joan describes the play as fresh, spirited and blissfully funny.
